Fani-Kayode: ‘I was not arrested, I was invited’

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation, said he was not arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as reported by various news media.

Fani-Kayode, speaking on the development on his presence at the EFCC Lagos office in a statement, said he was only invited by the commission.

The former minister arrived at the Lagos office of the commission in company with his lawyer around 2 pm and left at 8.30 pm.

It was learnt that Fani-Kayode was at the EFCC office to answer questions on possible forgery of hospital documents to hoodwink the court handling the case against him on money laundering with a view to stalling hearing.

Fani-Kayode said he was never arrested by the EFCC, but was invited by the commission.

He, however, didn’t give details on why he was asked to present himself at the EFCC office.

“Just arrived at the George Hotel for dinner. I was never arrested by the EFCC. I was invited & I flew down to Lagos to see them,” he wrote.

“I arrived in their office at 2.00pm & left at 8.30pm. I was granted bail on self recognition. They were very polite & professional. Thanks be to God.”

Fani-Kayode had been having a running battle with the EFCC for some time and he was once remanded for 67 days in 2016 alongside a former minister of finance, Nenadi Usman on a 17-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of N4.9 billion.
